Though the Kingdom Hearts series draws most of its characters from Disney’s long history, it also has its fair share of originals. In the new Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep PSP title, we get a glimpse into the origins of some of those characters, including a major series antagonist. Game director Tetsuya Nomura calls the title the “Episode 0″ of the series. Unlike when some directors have returned to their babies, though (cough George Lucas cough), this new version manages to build on the original with new technology and graphics while also retaining the charm of the first entries. The main characters of the game are Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, three characters searching for Master Xenahort, a master of the Keyblade (the game’s main weapon) who is trying to start a war. To give away too much of the plot would be a disservice to the game, but expect to also see plenty of familiar Disney friends. A new combat feature, Dimension Link (D-Link), lets players call these characters from different worlds to utilize their powerful attacks and finishing moves. Players can also link up for wireless multiplayer, playing either co-operatively or competitively in four different modes.American consumers got some treats that weren’t available in the original Japanese version, including voice acting by stars like Leonard Nimoy and Mark Hamill and a new difficulty level. These features will, however, be available in the Final Mix version which will be released in Europe in the near future.
