The new PSP is about to be released any month now. There is a lot that you need to know before you go and lay out the cash for one of these new PSP systems and I have the first specs right here. So what is under the hood of the newest PSP?

This system will feature a touch screen interface much like the iPhone and the iPad. Whether or not this will be utilized in game play has yet to be determined as well as how games will be played on the system. Sony got rid of the UMD with the release of the PSP Go and many gamers have still bought the old PSP in preference. Will Sony try this again with this PSP?

That is still unsure but as of right now the NGP (Next Generation Portable as Sony calls it) doesn’t appear to have a port for games. The Nintendo 3DS has an option to buy games for system downloads but still supports traditional game sold at stores. I really hope that Sony doesn’t go with an exclusive content download system again.

The reason is because if you lose, damage, or break your systems then you have to go through the trouble of downloading your games all over again. A friend of mine had this problem with the DLC for his X-Box and his Playstation. No matter how you cut it gamers like 60 dollar games to be something they can actually hold.

There have been several great games that have been released for the Sony PlayStation Portable (hereto referred as the PSP) console released. One I have been playing recently is the Strategy RPG known as “Tactics Ogre:Let Us Cling Together”. Fans of the classic title “Final Fantasy Tactics” may be familiar with the systems used in the game already as they use a very similar interface and their game design was handled by the legendary Yasumi Matsuno. However, even the most seasoned players may need help with the toughest challenges the game has to offer. In general, it is a good job to keep track of the “classes” that your party members are at various points in the game and attempt to have a varied party. While the previous “Final Fantasy Tactics” only allowed parties to consist of 5 members in a fight, the newer “Tactics Ogre” allows for 10 party members to appear on the battlefield at once. The game also features a new feature that allows you to rewind time in battle to a previous time if you make any mistakes. With this knowledge of the new game mechanics you should be able to conquer it in no time!

For more information on the types of games being released for the PSP and upcoming information and release dates you can check out Sony’s official website for the psp,us.playstation.com/psp

Hironobu Sakaguchi created the first Final Fantasy role-playing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System in an effort to save developer Square from bankruptcyhence the name. That was back in 1987. Over twenty years later, the Final Fantasy series has become one of the most beloved franchises in video game history, with fourteen main titles and at least an equal number of spin-offs. PSP gamers in particular have their pick of the litter when it comes to delving into this iconic series. If you’ve never experienced the original games before, but are a fan of long quests, expansive exploration, and engaging stories, check out the PSP remakes of Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II. These special 20th anniversary editions include remixed graphics and soundtracks, along with full-motion-video scenes. The first title includes dungeons that first appeared in the Dawn of Souls port for the Game Boy Advance. In addition, hardcore gamers will appreciate the new Labyrinth of Time dungeon, which is a timed area full of brutally powerful enemies in which your characters’ health is constantly drained.Final Fantasy II, the first sequel to the original, was originally unreleased in America, and the later Japanese game Final Fantasy IV was originally released as FF2 on the North American continent. It first appeared in America on the Playstation, but it’s still worth a look for PSP players, as it introduces many characters that recur throughout the franchise, including the chocobo mounts and the airship pilot Cid. This game again features never-before-seen dungeons with new equipment and enemies. The PSP is also home to an entirely new sub-franchise in the Final Fantasy series, which started with 2009′s Dissidia: Final Fantasy. This game contains elements of fighting and action-RPG gamesno taking turns here. However, players can also use special skills and utilize traps around the battlefield to get the upper hand on their opponent. Players in Western countries have the option of choosing to remove all RPG features and playing the game as a pure fighting title. Dissidia is available both on UMD and on the Playstation Network for download via wireless internet service. The title has proven so popular that a sequel, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, is set for release in 2011.The PSP also features some games that delve deeper into the stories of previous FF titles. For a long time, each Final Fantasy was unrelated to the one that came before, but the 2003 game Final Fantasy X-2 (a sequel to 2001′s Final Fantasy X) opened the door to revisit other titles in the series. The first such PSP game was released in North America in 2007.Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is a remake of a 1997(JP)/1998(US) title for the Playstation, and is set in the land of Ivalice, which is also the setting of the 2006 title Final Fantasy XII. FFXII‘s character Balthier is an unlockable character in The War of the Lions. Gameplay is similar to the original Playstation title, in that it is a tactical role-playing game that requires players to strategically move “units” across an isometric battlefield. The game also includes two new classes, a widescreen aspect ratio, and added cutscenes, and a new wireless multiplayer mode for co-op and competitive play.Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was released in North America in 2008, and is a prequel to the 1997 title Final Fantasy VII. FFVII is often considered one of the finest titles in the franchise, as well as one of the greatest games of all time. Crisis Core puts players in control of Zack Fair, a previously unplayable-character in the title, in an action-RPG adventure. Unlike other FF titles, combat is in real-time, and players only control one character. However, players can tailor the game to their own playing style by equipping Zack with different materia, which give him special skills, spells, or bonuses.

Though the Kingdom Hearts series draws most of its characters from Disney’s long history, it also has its fair share of originals. In the new Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep PSP title, we get a glimpse into the origins of some of those characters, including a major series antagonist. Game director Tetsuya Nomura calls the title the “Episode 0″ of the series. Unlike when some directors have returned to their babies, though (cough George Lucas cough), this new version manages to build on the original with new technology and graphics while also retaining the charm of the first entries. The main characters of the game are Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, three characters searching for Master Xenahort, a master of the Keyblade (the game’s main weapon) who is trying to start a war. To give away too much of the plot would be a disservice to the game, but expect to also see plenty of familiar Disney friends. A new combat feature, Dimension Link (D-Link), lets players call these characters from different worlds to utilize their powerful attacks and finishing moves. Players can also link up for wireless multiplayer, playing either co-operatively or competitively in four different modes.American consumers got some treats that weren’t available in the original Japanese version, including voice acting by stars like Leonard Nimoy and Mark Hamill and a new difficulty level. These features will, however, be available in the Final Mix version which will be released in Europe in the near future.

At “Dead Head Fred,” we’re always interested in games with unique playing styles, stories, and characters. While a screenshot of the original “Half-Minute Hero” (“Hero 30″ in Japan) wouldn’t let you know you’re looking at anything other than a traditional Japanese RPG, the gameplay was actually something very special. If you missed it the first time around, you’ll get another chance with the release of a sequel this November. The original “Half-Minute Hero” had several distinct modes, all built around the 30-second theme. In “Hero 30 Mode”, the gameplay will be familiar to anyone who’s ever played “Final Fantasy” or “Dragon Quest,” except that battles take place automatically. That’s because you have only 30 seconds to get powerful enough to defeat the level’s boss, and time only pauses when you enter a town. In “Evil Lord 30 Mode”, you step into the shoes of a creature-summoning Evil Lord who can only be outside for 30 seconds. During this time, you use traditional real-time strategy game tactics to finish a certain mission. In Princess 30 Mode, you control a crossbow-wielding princess with a 30-second curfew. Gameplay in this mode is similar to side-scrolling shoot-em-ups. Finally, there’s Knight 30 mode, where the player controls a typical action-hero Knight tasked with protecting a Sage while he warms up a powerful spell of destruction. Of course, the spell takes 30 seconds to charge. It sounds like the sequel will focus only on the RPG bits and drop all the extra modes. Since the RPG elements won the most acclaim in the first game, though, there shouldn’t be too much complaints. Replay value will also be improved with the ability to download new quests, or create your own. That’s in addition to the 90 quests that comprise the core game, spread out over five sections: Overture, Judgment, Revolution, Ragnarok, and Destiny. Despite its title, this sequel should offer fans a lot of value when it releases in Japan on November 4, and hopefully worldwide soon after.

With the PSP still receiving Sony’s strong support, the PSP Go is yet another addition to Sony’s strong hardware collection. The big selling point is that the PSP Go doesn’t use the Universal Media Disc (UMD) that its big brother does. Rather than buying physical copies of games, everything is downloaded via Wi-Fi. To support this, the PSP Go has 16 GB of internal memory for storing games, movies, and anything else you can find to download off the Playstation Store. Currently, you can also find game add-ons, comics, and demos. Here’s a quick rundown of the PSP Go’s other features:

Compatible with Memory Stick Micro for up to 32 GB of memory

Built-in Bluetooth support

Built-in Skype connection

43 smaller than original PSP

3.8″ LCD screen

Sliding screen to hide controls during storage

The Playstation Store offers almost all new games released after October 1, 2009, and several from before that, including Crazy Taxi: Fare Wares, Dead Head Fred, and Dynasty Warriors. The bonus, of course, is not having to carry each individual game around with you, but instead being able to select on the go whatever you feel like playing. There is a cost for this, thoughthe PSP Go currently retails at 249.99, while the PSP-3000 is only 169.99. In fact, the “Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Entertainment Pack” gets you a PSP-3000, the Peace Walker game, a 2 GB Memory Stick, and a download for the movie 2012 for only 199.99. Sony is currently trying to make the value more attractive for the Go by including free games3 in North America and 10 in the UK. I don’t know who decided that was fair, but it’s nevertheless a valiant attempt to get interest going for this machine, which could have a lot to offer if Sony can find a way to make it compete with their original product.

The Metal Gear series is one of Sony’s most beloved franchises, and it only seems to be getting better with time. The newest edition, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, is a PSP-only title, but it still manages to capture the action and detail that has made it such a hit on the bigger systems. Picking up after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, main character Solid Snake is serving as the head of a private militia dedicated to helping the helpless. He is hired to stave off a CIA invasion of Costa Rica, and accepts only to discover if his former lover, The Boss, is actually still alive. Since this is a Metal Gear game, you can be sure there’s more to the story than that, but this sets the game up and gets the player going.Gameplay consists of third-person action in which you travel through various exotic locales and try to eliminate enemies undetected. At your disposal are tranquilizer and actual guns, as well as various close-quarters combat moves. You’ll also need to persuade enemies to join your sideyou’re not going up against the CIA alone, are you? Of course, by “persuade,” I mean “knock out and helicopter away to your secret fortress.” Captured enemies can be assigned to various units, including combat, R&D, and more, opening up new gameplay choices and features. There is also an extensive multiplayer option where two players in main missions, or up to four players in boss battles, can join together to defeat the enemy. Another option for spending time between missions is building up your own Metal Gear, a literal walking tank which will make Snake even more deadly. There’s plenty to discover even after the official story is concluded, and despite being a little difficult in parts, should have enough to reward almost any player.

Invizimals: Come fall, North American fans will get an opportunity to play around with this game and the new PSP camera accessory that comes with it. While modeled after familiar games like Pokemon, in this title, players actually hunt monsters in the real world, which can then be captured and leveled up. It’s an interesting idea, but it remains to be seen whether it’ll take off.

Patapon 3: This rhythm game series sets itself apart with a rudimentary plot and interesting gameplay mechanics in which the player controls a tribe of warriors (the eponymous Patapon). Customization arises through manipulating the classes of the Patapon as well as leveling them up. Not much information has been released for this new chapter, but a multiplayer demo released on Tuesday, July 6, should help tide players over.

Ace Combat: Joint Assault: This game is coming in a matter of months, and should bring a nice burst of arcade-style action to the PSP. Players will be able to take to the skies either solo or on a co-operative campaign, where they can execute coordinated attacks. The AI will also be updated for this title, so enemy planes will react even more intelligently to the player’s choices.

EyePet: The PS3 game is coming to the PSP at the end of 2010. The player takes control of a cute (or creepy, depending on your perspective) fantasy pet and raises it in the real world, using the forthcoming PSP camera. Like Invizimals, this further blurs the line between fantasy and reality, and could reinvigorate the PSP for a new generation.

Since there hasn’t yet been a sequel to Dead Head Fred, you’ll have to go elsewhere for your horror-gaming fix. Luckily, the PSP has a couple of other options for all you thrill junkies out there.Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was released on PSP in March. The latest in the long-running Silent Hill series, this title is also a remake of the original game. For those who complained about the battle system in Dead Head Fred, you’ll love the system in Silent Hill: there isn’t one. Instead, players take on the role of Harry Mason as he searches for his daughter Cheryl after a car accident in the town of Silent Hill. The game takes its horror from the random labyrinths of ice that periodically appear in the town, and the unbeatable monsters that accompany them.As Harry, your only tools are a flashlight and a cell phone, which is used for taking pictures and finding hidden messages. The game also offers replay value, as your answers during in-game therapy sequences can change the appearance of monsters, main characters, and the ending. For a more action-packed experience, and also one more in line with the tongue-in-cheek nature of Dead Head Fred, there’s the early PSP game Death Jr.. In this title, you take the role of the Grim Reaper’s son, and slash your way through a horde of enemies including wraiths, toads, and spiders. The gameplay is mostly fighting with some awkward platforming sequences thrown in, but those shouldn’t detract from your experience too much. Besides, the main character (known as DJ) is just too cute to ignore, and his romance with his classmate Pandora, a goth girl with a penchant for opening locked boxes, provides a nice background to the action.
