Not one, but TWO new portable PS devices
Created on November 18th, 2010
If you’ve been paying close attention to Sony’s announcement’s recently, you’ve got to be pretty excited. If you haven’t, then prepare to be enlightened, because we have news on BOTH of Sony’s upcoming Playstation devices. That’s right, both. The first device is codenamed “Veta,” but is unofficially being called the Playstation Portable 2. Sony Computer Entertainment is developing the device in-house and plans on a fourth-quarter 2011 release. The device is expected to have an HD screen one inch larger than the PSP’s (approximately 5.3″ along the diagonal), a microphone, two analog sticks, a camera on both the front and back, and a touchpad on the back. Internal memory is expected to jump from 64 MB to 1 GBgreater even than the Xbox 360′s 513 MB. The UMD is being dropped to make room for something supposedly even better. To make sure that there’s a great selection of titles on hand for the release, dev kits are already being sent out to developers. One interesting tidbit that’s leaked out is that Sony’s in discussions with Japanese mobile company NTT DoCoMo to add a 3G network to the device. Pictures of a prototype version leaked out on November 17, 2010 and resemble the PSP Gohowever, the source says this version has been discarded in favor of a design similar to the original PSP.The other Playstation device in the pipeline is officially codenamed “Zeus.” Unofficially, it’s the “Playstation Phone,” and it’s being developed not by Sony Computer Entertainment but by Sony Ericsson. Engadget leaked photos of the prototype on October 26, 2010, showing a horizontal slider with traces of the PSP Go. The device will feature standard Playstation buttons (cross, circle, triangle, square), a D-pad, and two shoulder buttons, and will be Android-based. Unsurprisingly, the phone will be heavy on the mobile gaming, with graphics quality reported to be in the same range as the Playstation Portable. Sony Ericsson has applied for a trademark for something called the “Z-System”what this is has yet to be announced. No pricing models or release dates have been announced, but CNET comments that a spring release (the original expectation for the PSP 2) would make more sense than a holiday release. Although the phone was originally expected to carry both Playstation and Xperia (Sony Ericsson’s smartphone range) brands, the recent rumors suggest that the device will be purely Playstation. Will either of these devices be the ones to finally give the DS a run for its money? We’ve got a good feeling about it, but one problem: what are we going to do over the next year until the release?
